Idaho physician Rafael Beier was convicted of 71 counts of illegally dispensing opioids and sentenced to 16 years in federal prison.
Prosecutors alleged that Dr. Beier distributed opioids to approximately 12 patients, including minors, over several years. They also alleged he had engaged in inappropriate behavior and been unrepentant. Dr. Beier’s counsel suggested he suffered from a brain injury. The Court concluded that although Dr. Beier likely did have a mild brain injury he was not incompetent to stand trial or be sentenced. The FBI and DEA were involved in the case.
The case is United States v. Rafael Beier in the U.S. District Court for the District of Idaho.
