The patient presented to the emergency department one week after abdominal surgery with complaints of chills, shaking, and abdominal pain. She was tachycardic and labs were abnormal. Emergency department physicians diagnosed constipation and discharged the patient. Eight hours later, the patient returned to the emergency department. The patient was ultimately diagnosed with sepsis and required vasopressor support. She developed lower extremity gangrene and distal ischemia, requiring bilateral below-the-knee amputations as well as amputations of the fingertips on both hands.
