$435,000 Settlement: VA Misses Veteran's Fatal Stroke

Rawls Law Group recently secured a $435,000 settlement for the family of a veteran who died after VA providers failed to diagnose a life-threatening stroke in time to intervene.

The veteran presented to a VA emergency room with worsening neurological symptoms, and the on-call radiologist misread the imaging as normal. In reality, the scan showed a blockage of the arteries supplying blood to the brain. Because of this failure, the veteran was

never transferred for emergency intervention. He suffered a catastrophic stroke and died less than two weeks later.

The government's defense was that the stroke would not have been amenable to treatment even if the patient had been transferred.

We filed an FTCA claim against the United States government for medical negligence. The claim settled for $435,000, which we hope will help the veteran’s family recover from the unexpected and heartbreaking loss.
